ChatGPT can take part in sending WhatsApp messages from your number once it is connected to Spun, but what it can do depends on the access level a manager picked and on your plan. By default, a person approves every message before it goes out.
This page walks through each real step: writing text only, creating a send request, editing it, approving it, rejecting it, how Free MCP limits sends, and the separate autonomous option.
What happens when ChatGPT only writes the text?
At Read-only analyst and Assistant, no sends, ChatGPT cannot send anything. It can read your chats and, at Assistant, no sends, also organize chats and draft replies. When you ask it to write a reply at these levels, the text stays a draft: nothing is queued for sending and nothing reaches the customer.
| Access level | What ChatGPT can do | Can it send? |
|---|---|---|
| Read-only analyst | Read conversations, groups and contacts | No |
| Assistant, no sends | Also organize chats and draft replies | No |
| Assistant with sends | Also propose and schedule messages | Only through your approval settings |
The access levels on the Spun consent screen. A manager picks one when connecting and can change it later.
What is a queued send request?
At Assistant with sends, asking ChatGPT to send a message makes it submit a request to Spun instead of sending. The request shows the channel, the recipient, the message and the reason ChatGPT gave, and it waits in Spun under Tools, Automate, AI Sends.
The recipient has to be a conversation or contact that already exists in Spun, never a phone number typed into the chat. A request nobody approves expires after about 24 hours.
Can you edit a request before it goes out?
Yes. In AI Sends, a teammate can change the text before approving it, for example to correct a date. The edited version goes out as that teammate's message, and Spun keeps the original ChatGPT wording on record.
What happens when someone approves it?
Approval is what sends the message. Any teammate with send permission can approve. At that moment Spun checks again: whether the channel is connected, your quotas, and whether the customer replied since ChatGPT wrote the draft. The message then goes out from your organization's own number.
If two people approve at the same time, it is still sent once. Approving during your quiet hours holds the message until the quiet hours end.
What happens when someone rejects it?
Nothing is sent. Rejecting closes the request in AI Sends, and a request that is neither approved nor rejected expires after about 24 hours, also without sending.
How do sends work on Free MCP?
- Every message ChatGPT proposes waits for your approval, with no exception.
- Your number can reach up to 200 different contacts a month. People you already messaged that month do not count again, so you can keep replying to them.
- You approve in the read-and-approve inbox that comes with Free MCP, with 7 days of message history.
- Replies inside groups your number is already in are allowed. Posting to a new group and broadcast lists are not part of Free MCP: Spun does not send them and explains that messaging many people at once puts your number at risk of a WhatsApp ban.

Can a manager let ChatGPT send without approval?
Yes, on paid plans, as a separate and deliberate choice. A manager turns on autonomous sending for one connected app in Spun settings, under Settings, AI Assistant (MCP), Connected AI apps, and confirms it by typing AUTONOMOUS. Your organization's send setting has to allow autonomous sends as well. The consent screen ChatGPT shows when connecting never grants this.
Autonomous sending covers text messages. Photos and files an AI app wants to send always wait for a person, and quiet hours and Spun's safety checks still apply. Reconnecting the app turns autonomous sending off again, and Spun warns that an app that both reads conversations and sends on its own could be misused if someone tricks or takes over the AI.

Once you trust a connected app, say ChatGPT, a manager can turn on autonomous sending for that app alone, confirming it by typing AUTONOMOUS. Its text messages then go out without waiting in the approval queue. Reconnecting the app turns this off again. Media taken from another conversation still waits for a person, and quiet hours and your send rules still apply.
What can ChatGPT not do at any level?
- Send at Read-only analyst or Assistant, no sends.
- Give itself autonomous sending. Only a manager can turn it on, inside Spun, and only managers can approve the connection in the first place.
- Send photos or files without a person approving them.
- Send to a phone number that is not already a conversation or contact in Spun.
- On Free MCP: post to a new group, use broadcast lists, reach more than 200 different contacts in a month, or schedule sends. Scheduled sends, scheduled workflows and automations are on paid plans.
