WhatsApp formatting cheat sheet
| Style | What you type | How it looks |
|---|---|---|
| Bold | *hello* | hello |
| Italic | _hello_ | hello |
| Strikethrough | ~hello~ | |
| Monospace | ```hello``` | hello |
| Inline code | `hello` | hello |
| Bulleted list | * hello
- hello | hello hello |
| Numbered list | 1. hello
2. hello | 1.hello 2.hello |
| Quote | > hello | hello |
The symbols must touch the text: *hello* becomes bold, but * hello * does not. Lists and quotes go at the start of a line, with a space after the symbol.
How formatting works on WhatsApp
WhatsApp formats text with symbols placed around the words. This tool adds the symbols for you, so you can prepare a message, an announcement or a broadcast on a computer and paste it into any chat.
You can also combine styles, for example bold and italic together. Inside monospace, symbols stay exactly as typed.
